Transit Vans

The first European vans to be called Transit Vans were built in Cologne, Germany. Ford was the creator of this vehicle. It first came into being in 1953 and was called the FK1000.

These vans from Germany were not exported all that much. Ford also introduced a number of transit models with the years. Let's try to trace the history of each Transit developed by Ford.

* 1965-78

This was the second generation of vehicles created by Ford. Introduced in 1965, this was also the first actual Transit vehicle created by Ford. These vans are still in production today.

A landmark in the creation of these Transit Vans was when Henry Ford II tried to bring the British Ford and the German Ford together to bring out a path-breaking new design for it. Before this, both the companies had been arch rivals. Their being united gave the Transit a real boost.

The Ford Transit vans had a sleek and compact American look and could carry a reasonable load. Hence, the Transit replaced many other vehicles and changed the entire concept of light goods transport.

Another reason for the success of the Transit vans was the amazing number of models and body styles. You could choose from panel vans, pick-up trucks, crew-cabs, minibuses and many others.

* 1978-86

This third generation of Transit vans came into being in the late 70's. The nose was extended, more space was made in the interior of the vehicle and the engines used were more powerful than those of the earlier generation. Models were also introduced to serve as sturdy police vans. Further improvement was made on the model by introducing a black grille in the front, which could support huge headlights.

* 1986-94

The body was further developed. Now the windscreen and bonnet were placed at the same angle. Some minor changes were made too, which made it look even better.

* 1994-2000

More space was created inside the van, engine more powerful than ever and the option of air-conditioning was made available.

* 2000-06

The major change was the introduction of front wheel and real wheel drive. The vehicles had become so popular that people referred to any van as the same size as Transit vans.

* AT PRESENT

The vehicle is given new front and rear lights, is capable of more advanced functions and also won the International Van of the Year, 2007.
