Snow Tire

Snow tire is necessary for drivers who live or work in regions where snow and ice is prevalent. Regardless of the numerous safety features installed on a vehicle, the tires are what allow the driver to maneuver on risky surfaces such as snow and ice. When purchasing winter tires consumers should look for the symbol of a peaked mountain with a snowflake.

Tires bearing this symbol meet very specific performance requirements regarding snow traction. Additionally, such tires are designed for use in severe winter, ice and snow conditions.

While snow tire at first glance may appear similar, they are not all created equal. There are different tires that perform specific tasks and this should be taken into consideration prior to purchase.

* Best Performing
The Michelin X-Ice has been consistently rated as the best overall winter tire. In road tests on both snow and ice, this tire has performed nearly equal to studded tires. The X-Ice is also quieter than most other snow tire . Because these tires are designed for harsher circumstances, they do not perform as well on wet or dry pavement.

* Budget Tires for Milder Winters
The Viking Snow Tech tires are not as effective on ice and snow as the X-Ice, but they do perform very well on wet and dry pavement and are particularly resistant to hydroplaning. The Viking tires are better suited for drivers who live in areas where snow melts quickly, leaving slush. Additionally, the snow tire is less expensive than the X-Ice.

* Studded Tire
Studded tires are usually needed in the most extreme of climates. They are at the extreme end of the snow tire line. However, drivers who drive in ice-prone areas should consider studded tires. * Light Trucks and SUVs
For the most part, it is quite appropriate to keep all season tires on light trucks and SUVs during the winter unless the climate is harsh. Winter tires for these vehicles allow better grip of the road surface and improve handling. The Bridgestone Winter Dueler DM-Z2 has out-performed many other similar tires in accelerating, braking and cornering on ice.

While tires that are marked "M + S" indicating that they are mud and snow tires or all season tires, offer safe all weather performance, they may not perform well in heavy snow or ice. In more extreme climates, snow tire is the answer to better performance on winter-compromised road surfaces.
